An exploration of the party wall and ficus strategy in simultaneous living, two families co-exist in the same space, with varying degrees of interaction between them. The central courtyard is the only place of physical interaction between the two families.

In Newari culture (an ethnic group in Nepal), the central courtyard is a shared space among relatives who live in the same land, often a place to gather or for events. This design is developed around a central courtyard.

Working with clients, a family of 6 and 8 respectively, the dwelling was designed to meet their individual and general requirements. The site area is approximately 12000 sq. ft, with two entrances connecting to nearby roads. The interplay between the brick and concrete exterior emphasizes the simultaneously occupied space. The perforated brick facade creates various degrees of privacy in the dwelling.

*The ficus strategy involves a central structure buried within an outer cage of diverse structures and the party wall strategy refers to a highly inflected surface that separates two programs that simultaneously reference each other’s spaces.*
